So I found a post on one of the social justice blogs I follow over on tumblr (I don't have an account, but I actually just check them regularly from a bookmark) about this little girl who accidentally stumbled into pornographic MLP content and doesn't want anything to do with the show anymore. It's really sad, actually. I'm very disappointed that something bad happened to her.
But the commentary.
The commentary was all about bronies. It ranges from confusion about the fandom to "why do bronies have to ruin MLP for children" and --- yeah, we've all kind of heard this before, right? I mean, the fandom's made documentaries about this kind of thing and tried so many times to explain ourselves, as if we owe an explanation of ourselves.
So I'm opening this journal, and I'm going to leave it open forever. This is not to fuel hatred or defensive behavior. Anything that is read as hostile, rude, or accusatory will be removed. I want a conversation. Tell me why you joined the fandom
If you aren't in it, feel free to ask a question. Any question. Tell me why the fandom is important to you. Tell me your favorite artist in it! I want to show that we're not just some stereotyped fetish group drawing porn of ponies (not that there's anything wrong with also liking that part of the fandom!).
Let's talk, non-bronies. We might be bronies, and you aren't: but we're all still human.
-----
I'll start:
My name is Brigitte Powers. At the time of this writing, I'm twenty-four years old. I ran into ponies through my brother, who chanced upon it on Reddit or something during season 1. I got into the fandom because the show was witty, adorable, and well-animated. I continued in it because the messages the show sent? The positivity and love and acceptance became things I needed in my life.
The show praised that it was okay to be yourself, and that your "self" can be complex and very different from the other people you meet in your life. It taught that the key to friendship was learning to celebrate each Self for what they bring to the table that you don't, and what you bring that they don't, and those things in the middle that you share. Friendship and humanity is about marveling in that glorious human condition of just existing, through all coincidence or destiny, at the same time as these other humans around you - and you mesh - or don't mesh - together to create a universe.
Did I learn all that from MLP? Probably not. But in less words, the show celebrated those things in life that I appreciate about social life. So I was hooked.
I have a lot of friends on tumblr with ask blogs and stuff, so I really can't name a favorite brony artist. It'll come across as egotistical, but my favorite is myself! Just because the idea that I can call myself an "artist" now without my self-esteem making me roll my eyes means this fandom's done wonders for me.

Your turn! Ask me a question - or tell me something about YOUR self.
